Braun ThermoScan 5 Ear Thermometer

I always dread this time of year and I'm certain I am not alone in this. Every parent knows it is only a matter of time before their child (or one of their children if they have more than one) picks up nasty germs and gets ill with either a cough, cold or the one thing all parents dread, the sickness bug! There is nothing more worrying for me than when one of the boys is poorly. I constantly fuss over them making sure they are comfortable and always asking to make sure they are OK (well as OK as the illness will allow). The one thing I have always done whilst they are ill though is to check their temperature to make sure that any change could be noticed and if needed a call to the doctor can be made. I have always used a digital thermometer as I find these easier to read the results. Recently we were asked to review the Braun ThermoScan 5 Ear Thermometer.

The one thing that I love about the Braun ThermoScan 5 is that it has to be the easiest thermometer to use ever. It gives an accurate reading in a matter of seconds and is painless for your child. Because it is so easy to use it makes the process of monitoring a temperature much easier for both parent and child. If you have a child that doesn't like things in their ears or they are sleeping you can still take their temperature with ease and without disturbing them.

This thermometer is designed to measure the heat that is generated by the eardrum and surrounding tissue, the eardrum shares blood supply with the temperature control centre in the brain. The ear accurately reflects the body’s core temperature making it ideal for measuring a child’s temperature.

The thermometer also features a new innovative technology. It is called ExacTemp. What makes this thermometer different from others on sale is that is has a pre-warmed tip. This improves the accuracy of the reading but because it has a soft, flexible speculum and tip it ensure the thermometer is gentle and comfortable on a child’s ear. A guidance system alerts parents to the correct positioning inside the ear. It has a memory function that stores the last eight temperature readings. A fantastic idea if like me you forget numbers no matter how important they are. This means you can track your child's temperature accurately and if needed can recite them to a doctor - can be very handy in emergency situations.

The ThermoScan 5 is safe to use on the whole family even newborns, the thermometer can be easily cleaned and switched between users because it uses disposable lens filter, which avoids cross contamination. Simply use the lens ejector to remove the filter and add a new one for each reading. You get a small supply in the box and you can buy more separately for £7.99 for a box of 40 lens.

The ThermoScan 5 is has an RRP of £43.90. It is available to buy from Boots, Mothercare, John Lewis, Mamas & Papas.
